I remember to this day the first automation I built. It was 17 years ago.

It was right at the start of my career, when I was working as an associate in financial management and control. We were about to gather primary data as input for the annual report related to internal controls, financial management and internal audit state of the system.

That meant 100+ letters with variables changing for each recipient.

There was no ChatGPT back then and Google was not what it is now. No easy to follow along tutorials.

So I gave it a thought.

Who is the ChatGPT of that time? The mind went to my friend.

Called him.

Went to his home.

He showed me how to do mail merge.

Boom. Amazing.

Basically you build a simple database, I used MS Excel back then, where you store all the variables. You just run mail merge and you interconnect your letters in MS Word with the database in MS Excel and you run mail merge.

Amazing. 2-3 days of work done in 20 minutes. You just had to final check the formatting, since sometimes that would need some fixing. Practically a few scrolls, pressing Ctrl+Enter here and there and you are done.

While everyone was panicking I was relaxed and had just taken the longer midday break in the sun. Enjoying, laughing and drinking coffee in the sun with friends.

I still remember that feeling. Like I had discovered America. Unbelievable.

That skill stayed with me for so long. Later in my career when I was working on some large procurement projects, procuring and preparing bids for multiple million euro projects, I used the same automation logic.

The feeling was off the charts.
